Supported plan structures

Quick Overview

Our platform handles most common electricity plan structures, including standard rates, time-of-use pricing, seasonal variations, and solar feed-in tariffs. While we cover the vast majority of residential plans, there are a few complex structures we don't currently support to ensure our calculations remain accurate.

Detailed Breakdown

Below is a comprehensive list of what our system can and can't calculate. Don't worry if some of these terms sound complex - we'll explain each one further down.

Support Matrix

Plan Component Structure Status Notes
Daily Supply Charge Single fixed rate ✅ Supported Standard daily connection fee

Volume-based tiers ❌ Not supported Rare in residential plans
Usage Charges Single anytime rate ✅ Supported Standard flat rate

Volume-based tiers ✅ Supported Different rates for usage volumes

Seasonal rates ✅ Supported Summer/winter variations

Time-of-use (TOU) ✅ Supported Peak/Off-peak/Shoulder

TOU with volume-based tiers ✅ Supported Different rates for different usage volumes

Seasonal TOU ✅ Supported Seasonal peak/off-peak

Controlled load (flat) ✅ Supported e.g., Hot water systems

Controlled load (TOU) ✅ Supported Less common but supported

Demand charges ❌ Not supported Coming soon
Solar Feed-in Flat rate ✅ Supported Standard solar credit

Volume-based tiers ✅ Supported Different rates by export amount

Time-of-use ✅ Supported Different rates by time of day

Seasonal rates ❌ Not supported Summer/winter variations

Negative rates ✅ Supported When exports might incur costs

Understanding Plan Components

Daily Supply Charges

This is your daily connection fee to the electricity grid.

What we support: Standard fixed daily rates

What we don't support: Plans where the daily rate changes based on how much power you use (these are quite rare)

Usage Charges

This is what you pay for the electricity you use.

What we support:

  • Standard flat rates
  • Rates that change based on how much you use
  • Different rates for different times of day
  • Different rates for different seasons
  • Controlled load rates (for things like hot water systems)

What we don't support: Demand charges (these are complex charges based on your highest usage

periods). They are becoming more and more common, so support for this is coming soon.

Solar Feed-in Tariffs

This is what you get paid for sending solar power back to the grid.

What we support:

  • Standard flat rates
  • Rates that change based on how much you export
  • Even negative rates

What we don't support: Seasonal rate variations (e.g. winter rate / summer rate)

What This Means For You

If you encounter a plan that has an unsupported structure, we'll exclude it from our calculations rather than risk showing you incorrect savings figures. We believe it's better to be upfront about what we can't calculate than to make assumptions that might mislead you.

Future Developments

We're constantly working to support more plan structures. Demand charges are next on our list, and we're evaluating other complex structures based on user feedback and market changes.
